Grab your Theatre Passport and go Around the Stage in 80 Days with Serenbe Playhouse Academy! Travelers can drop-in on our theatre expedition for one class or for many as the THEATRE EXPLORER’S CLUB travels to a new destination in theatre each week, from Creating a Play, to Script Writing, to Musical Theatre, Stage Combat, Dance, Improv and Stage Makeup! In each 3 hour masterclass, a unique Serenbe Playhouse specialist will lead our theatre makers through a new theatre adventure. The last 30 minutes of each class will be open to friends and family to join, for a fun way to observe and celebrate all our explorers are learning! Members of the Theatre Explorer’s Club will receive their very own Serenbe Playhouse Academy Passport and earn a stamp for each class they attend, so our young adventurers can brag of their vast travels through the world of theatre for many years to come! Whether you take a boat, train or plane, get to Serenbe Playhouse Academy this Winter to experience Atlanta’s hottest Theatre Destination!
January 14: Create a Play
Devising Theatre with JUSTIN WALKER
Under the guidance of Justin Walker, students will be immersed in a playmaking experience that will explore the theatrical elements of playwriting, design, architecture, improvisation, and collaboration. Students will work together to create an original site specific piece of theatre that will be shared with family and friends at the end of the class.
Justin Walker holds an MFA in Acting from the University of Arkansas and as worked with Serenbe Playhouse as an actor, teacher, and dialect coach since season one. He was last seen at Serenbe Playhouse as Brom Bones in The Sleepy Hollow Experience. Regional acting credits include: Alliance Theatre, TheatreSquared, Horizon Theatre, Warehouse Theatre, Georgia Shakespeare, Aurora Theatre, Atlanta Shakespeare, True Colors Theatre, and Arkansas Rep, among others. This spring he will be featured in the world premiere of Jimmy Maize’s The Temple Bombing at the Alliance, developed in association with Tectonic Theatre Project of New York.
January 21: Passport to Playwriting
Script Writing with JESSICA DE MARIA
In Passport to Playwriting students will learn the basics of script writing. By using improv activities and group writing games, students will learn to how to take their ideas to the stage using dialogue, monologue, stage directions and design. The class will culminate in each student applying what they’ve learned to the creation of a 3 minute play. In the final half hour, freinds and family are welcome to join our class for readings of each 3 minute play, created in just 3 hours by our budding authors!
Jessica De Maria is an Atlanta based writer, actor and teacher. January 28: Ease on Down the Road
Music Theatre with JENNIFER ACKER and MARY MATHER
In Ease on Down the Road, students will learn music and moves to Broadway numbers. Led by Serenbe Playhouse’s Director of Education, Jennifer Acker and Georgia newcomer, Mary Mather, the class will incorporate a variety of improvisational and theatre games, vocal and dance instruction, and a dash of prop construction. In the final 20 minutes of class, family and friends are welcome to join us in a game or two and also to enjoy the musical stylings of their students.
Jennifer Acker is an Atlanta actor, director and singer in Atlanta as well as the Director of Education for Serenbe Playhouse. She was most recently seen as the Story Teller in The Sleepy Hollow Experience.
Mary Mather recently relocated to Atlanta after spending the last 6 years working in Los Angeles as a theatre educator. She has music directed and choreographed numerous musical theatre productions including Into the Woods, Annie Get Your Gun, Little Shop of Horrors and is currently in production for Mary Poppins. February 11: BAM! IMPROV!
Improvisation with MOLLY GILMARTIN
In this fast-paced workshop students will warm-up their voices, bodies, and imaginations through a series of exciting theatre games. Then, led by Molly Gilmartin, students will drive head first into the basics and learn what it takes to be a top-notch improviser. By the end of the workshop, students will have the tools to create a terrific scene right on the spot!
Molly Gilmartin is the Education Associate at Georgia Ensemble Theatre, where she has been teaching improvisation to all ages for 5 years. Molly holds a B.A. for Kennesaw State Universality and recently graduated out of the improvisation program at Dad’s Garage Theatre Company. Molly also teaches scene study, devised theatre, and sketch comedy classes.
Dancing for the Big Stage with LEAH KEELAN
Step out of the audience and into your favorite musical – Centerstage! This technical class is a fun way to learn and perform choreography from your favorite Broadway shows like Hamilton, Footloose, Hairspray, and Wicked. This is an instructional Broadway class with warm up, across the floor, the importance of acting while dancing lesson, and show stopping choreography. The class will come to an end with a Broadway Showcase of different styles, techniques, and songs for family and friends. Bring your dancing shoes and get ready to perform!
Leah Keelan is a current performer in Atlanta. You might have seen her as one of our Summer Camp instructors and Dance instructor for our Broadway Bound Camp. She has been performing since the age of three! She also has been trained in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, hip hop, and of course Broadway!
February 25: Take a Hit!
Stage Combat with KRISTIN STORLA
Ever wanted to learn how actor’s “take” a hit? Wondered just how fights on stage and screen are done safely? Or do you just want to have fun pretending to kick booty and take names!? Join local teaching artist, Kristin Storla for an afternoon of fake kicks, slaps, and more! Over the course of 3 hours students will learn the basics of unarmed choreography for the stage. Techniques will focus on the story-telling aspect of movement and self-awareness. Come dressed to play!

Kristin Storla is an Atlanta based actor, choreographer, and teaching artist. After receiving a BFA in Theatre Performance from Columbus State University, Kristin moved onto the apprentice program with the Atlanta Shakespeare Company. She has been fighting 8+ years, trained and certified through the Society of American Fight Directors. With a handful of fight choreography credits topping her resume, Kristin is a Serenbe Playhouse Academy teaching favorite and has taught ages 6+ combat all over the state of Georgia!
