welcome to serenbe playhouse

Brian ClowdusA Word From The Artistic Director . . .

Two years ago, I made my first trip to Serenbe and was swept away. Everything about it – the cobble stone streets, the art galleries, the organic farm, even the children playing in the streets, told me this place was something special – it was a modern day Mayberry – a place where people still speak when they pass you, a place where “put it on my tab” is a common payment method and a place where dreamers from many corners come to fulfill their lifelong passions. In short, it was, in so many ways, the place I’d been waiting for all my life – a place where I might open a theatre unlike any other – an eco-conscious, eclectic, playhouse nestled in a community of artists and seekers that would produce theatre to engage, inspire and challenge.

Here I am, two years later, poised to launch the inaugural season of Serenbe Playhouse through partnership with The Serenbe Institute for Arts, Culture & the Environment, and my Founding Board of Directors. I couldn’t be more proud of the work we’ve accomplished so far and the inspiring theatre we will produce this summer.

Demonstrating our commitment to theatre for all ages, the season will open with The Jungle Book. This production will be produced in the woods of Serenbe on The Treehouse in the Woods Stage, reiterating themes of Ecology and Environmental Love that lie at Serenbe’s core. The Musical, John and Jen, will kick off the mainstage productions in The Serenbe Courtyard Stage followed by a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s R&J. Both these productions deal with current issues by looking at past periods as a canvas for present reflection. Although The Vietnam War dust has settled and Capulets and Montagues are no longer forbidden to love each other, those themes live on in our culture, but with different players and circumstances.

The success of our first season will be largely based on YOU, our potential audience and founding members. I would love to have you in the audience this summer and encourage you to become one of our Founding Members. I cannot stress enough how important your contributions will be to the success of our first season and seasons to follow. There are varying levels of contribution to match your ability, so everyone has the chance to be a member!  Echoing our logo, the firefly, we are READY and SET to GLOW this summer and hope that you will join us.

See you under the stars,
